Matt Baker, Head Coach

Coach Baker teaches Biology at Shawnee Mission West High School and is the head wrestling coach for both the SMW Vikings and the Westridge Middle School Wildcats. This is Coach Baker’s fifth year at SMW.


Baker joined SMW from Maryville University in St. Louis, where he served as an assistant wrestling coach for two years while earning his Masters of Arts in Education.  During his coaching career at Maryville, the squad earned 3rd place finishes at the NCAA National Championships in 2014 and 2015 and also won the 2015 NWCA National Duals Championship. Baker served as the individual coach and training partner to three NCAA Division II All-Americans.


While competing for the Maryville Saints wrestling team, Baker graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Biology with a Minor in Education and Chemistry.  Baker compiled a collegiate record of 123-36 and in 2013 became the first NCAA Division II National Champion in Maryville University history.  He is a four-time Academic All American and Recipient of the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Male Sportsmanship Award.  Baker began his college education at the University of Nebraska-Omaha where he was a member of three NCAA Division II National Championship teams (2009, 2010, 2011). Baker made the move from Omaha to St. Louis with Coach Mike Denney to start the new wrestling program at Maryville University. 


Baker graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 2008. Under Coach Chip Ufford, Baker was a 3X state qualifier and twice finished 3rd at the Kansas State 6A Tournament.


Coach Baker and wife Jamie recently celebrated their third wedding anniversary. They live in Lenexa, KS with their daughter Natalee and golden retriever, Halee Berry. Mrs. Baker is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Children’s Mercy.
